Stepper motors

A stepper motor is a synchronously rotating machine, usually powered by direct current pulses. The magnetic field is generated by gradually powering up individual pole pairs. The rotor always moves between stable positions at a certain angle - we are talking about movement in steps. The number of steps is determined by the number of pole pairs, and can also be influenced by the control method. Control electronics are always required to move this motor - a stepper motor controller. Mechanical contact and therefore friction do not occur in stepper motors anywhere other than in the bearings. They are therefore characterized by high mechanical resistance, long life and almost maintenance-free operation. The disadvantage of stepper motors is the so-called step loss, which occurs when the limit load is exceeded. This negative property can be eliminated in advance by choosing a suitable motor and controller, taking into account the torque drive characteristics.
